Here is a short presentation of the use of WIMS in some high school [Schaersvoorde , the Netherlands]. At our high school [Schaersvoorde , the Netherlands] we are using WIMS for the past 6 years evolving from a local experiment on a laptop as WIMS-intranetserver...  into a day-to-day schoolwide source of math-teaching.

There is a steady increase in WIMS activity.

This year we've started something new on level H1,H2,H3. Using "threshold math-skill tests", based on the very practical "WIMS-exam" feature of score dependencies.

Here the following elementary math skills are being tested and graded:

        o arithmetics
                + fractions
                + priority rules
                + powers
                + roots
          o algebra
                + working with variables
                + factorizing etc
          o metric system conversions
The score dependency test [H1,H2,H3]

For training and teaching, the material is offered as "worksheets" and "training-exams" in their own WIMS classes.
Pupils can exercise without limitation in time and number [ notice that >99% of our student population is online with fairly cheap ADSL or Cable connections ]. The scores obtained for this training work is -normally- not taken into account.

For the "real test" all pupils are registered in special "exam-classes". These classes are only accesible through our school network and only open/active during the actual test. The number of trials for these particular WIMS-exams are limited to 3. And the duration of this threshold math-skill test is 50 minutes. The scores for these tests are very important for the actual grade. The "threshold tests" are build using the "score dependencies" feature of WIMS.

For the real exams and training exams we use a 80% threshold with a layout like (for example) :
o 8 exercises in total: each exercise consists of a least 3 sub_questions.
          o exercise 1,2,3 are without a threshold.
o exercise 4 is only accessible for those pupils that have obtained an average score of 80% for the first 3 exercises.
o exercise 5 is only accessible for those pupils that have obtained an average score of 80% for the first 4 exercises.
and so on ... This will give the pupils the opportunity to train these basic skills thoroughly and provide them with a solid basis for the rest of their highschool mathematical activities. Our first experiences with this particular approach, show that pupils consider the threshold as a "kind of game": when exercise number 4 is completed with success, the first "safe game level" is reached. Because the scores are taken into account for the end term grade, many pupils are really fanatic in their pursuit of high scores.

Using our own "home made" freestyle WIMS exercises, pupils learn to write their answers very precisely. Non-precise answers will not be accepted without penalty by these modules. And - as an educational principle - no multiplechoice or drag&drop-type exercises will be used.
 H4,H5,H6 classes

For the 15 to 18 year old pupils, we do not - yet - use this "threshold approach" on the math-skill tests. The WIMS training and teaching material for these higher classes is offered in normal worksheets and training-exams and is unlimited available (24/7).

The actual "WIMS-exam" of 50 minutes for a real grade [only H4] is conducted at school:  very similar to a normal paper-test.

For the H5, H6 classes, WIMS is still used only for training and education purposes. No real scores can be obtained. We try to stimulate WIMS training by incorporation of some literal WIMS exercises into the actual paper-tests.

In the next school year "WIMS-exams" for a real grade will also implemented in our H5 classes.
